General Safety Instructions

Caution! Read all safety warnings and instructions!

Be sure to keep this Instruction Manual on hand for future reference.

Read these General Safety Instructions  as well as the Instruction Manual carefully and follow all instructions. The PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® must be correctly fitted and used to provide increased comfort and support while playing and to prevent injury to you or damage to your instrument. The PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® could damage your instrument if it comes loose and impacts your instrument, or if it slips off causing you to lose control of your instrument.

Incorrect use or maintenance could also result in physical discomfort, interruptions while playing your instrument or, in rare cases, in physical harm.

Excessive force put onto the KorfkerRest Luna will cause it to snap.

The PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® cannot be shaped by bending. Trying to do so will cause it to snap.

Please observe the following safety recommendations:

Before every use verify the correct setup and secure attachment of your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA®. Refer to the Instruction Manual for details.

Check all parts of your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® for damage, wear and tear before every use. If damaged or worn parts are detected do not use your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® until these parts have been replaced. Continued use can lead to direct damage to the instrument,  instability of your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® or discomfort while playing your instrument.

Before making adjustments, always detach your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® and move your instrument to a safe place.

Quick start guide

To get a first impression of the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® please follow these steps:

STEP 1

Attach the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® onto your instrument.

PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® on violin

STEP 2

If the rest is too wide to be attached securely onto your instrument, one of the two barrel legs will need to be removed from its hook and reversed in order to reduce the width of the rest.

To remove a barrel leg, tilt it inwards about half way before pulling it out of its hook. Now, while holding the rest firmly with the opposite hook and barrel leg in one hand, use the other hand to pull the barrel leg out of its hook by its rubber foot. Your thumb should be used for support (see picture). Now the barrel leg can be reversed and inserted back into the hook by lining its barrel up against the hook jaws and firmly clicking it into position.

Manual

To benefit fully from its features and to ensure a long lifespan for your purchase, please read this Instruction Manual, including the General Safety and Maintenance Instructions, carefully before use.

Using the barrel legs

The PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® for violin comes supplied with six numbered barrel legs (see picture 1).
The viola model comes with eight barrel legs, differentiated by the letters A to H (see picture 2).
The short barrel legs are to be used primarily for the shoulder side, the long ones for the chest side.

1 Violin model barrel legs no. 1 - 61  Violin model barrel legs no. 1 - 6

2 Viola model barrel legs A to H
2  Viola model barrel legs A to H

These barrel legs are used to change the width of the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® and to adjust its position relative to the instrument. For those adjustments one or both of the barrel legs need to be reversed or replaced by an alternative barrel leg. (Recommended combinations are found in the barrel leg combination charts for violin and viola.

When reversing a barrel leg, first tilt it inwards about half way. Now, while holding the rest firmly with the opposite hook and barrel leg in one hand, use the other hand to pull the barrel leg out of its hook by its rubber foot. The thumb should be used for support (see picture 3).

Now reverse the barrel leg and insert it back into the hook by lining its barrel up against the hook jaws and firmly clicking it into position (see picture sequence A to E). Finally remember to position the rubber foot so its jaw openings face inwards.

When replacing a barrel leg, first turn its rubber foot out of its thread until you can see the start of the silvery slot in the screw. Now pull the barrel leg out of its hook as seen in picture 3 and remove the rubber foot. Next, click the alter- native barrel leg into the vacant hook and carefully screw the rubber foot into its thread.

When turning a rubber foot deeper into a barrel leg, please take care not to turn beyond its lowest position or to use excessive force, as this will damage the rubber foot or the thread of the barrel leg. When in the highest position, always keep at least six full thread rotations inside the internal thread of the barrel leg. Failing to do so can lead to instability or damage to the thread.

To ensure that the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® functions correctly over time, it is important to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating between the hooks and the barrel legs. For this reason it is recommended to place your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® into its included cloth bag when not in use.

Width adjustment

Each of the three (violin) or four (viola) barrel legs of each length has a different off-centre thread position and can be clicked into the hooks in two different ways: with the shaft outwards for a wide position and inwards for a narrow position.

Do not use the viola barrel legs C, D, G and H in their narrow position. Doing so will cause instability.

As an example, in picture 4 you see barrel legs no. 3 and 6 positioned for the maximum width of the violin model.
In picture 5 you see the same barrel legs reversed for its minimum width.

The barrel leg combination charts for violin and viola show with which combinations to achieve a specific width. In the charts, »w« stands for the »wide« use of a barrel leg (shaft outwards), »n« stands for its »narrow« use (shaft inwards).

Before reversing or replacing a barrel leg please refer to the chapter »Using the barrel legs«.

By using the six included barrel legs, the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® for violin can be adjusted in 2 mm increments to fit instruments with a lower bout width of 186 - 210 mm. This spans sizes from 3⁄4 to full size. When used on a 3⁄4 size violin, please take extra care that the size and height of the rest are suitable for the player in question.

Using its eight included barrel legs, the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® for viola can be adjusted in 3 mm increments to fit instruments with a lower bout width between 222 mm and 258 mm.

Additionally, these barrel legs are compatible with the violin model of the KorfkerRest Luna allowing it to be widened to 224 mm.

Please note that when either the violin or viola model is placed closer to the player's neck, it will also fit wider instruments than stated here.

To maintain the correct leg angles, which is essential for maximum stability, we recommend using the barrel leg combinations found in the charts on page 14/15.

For extra low positions two short barrel legs may be used. In this case the width range reduces to 188 - 208 mm for the violin and to 225 - 254 mm for the viola model.

Position relative to the instrument

Once a good width setting for your violin has been found (please refer to the chapter »Width adjustment«), you can experiment with the following subtle positioning.

As can be seen in the barrel leg combination charts for violin and viola, most width settings can be achieved with more than one barrel leg combination. In the charts, »w« stands for the »wide« use of a barrel leg (shaft outwards), »n« stands for its »narrow« use (shaft inwards).

By using these different combinations, the position of the shoulder rest can be subtly altered in relation to the violin so that it sits either further over the shoulder or more to- wards the chest. For instance, if the width of the violin rest needs to be 200 mm, the combination 3n/6w will position the rest further over the shoulder (see picture 6), 3w/6n will position it more towards the chest (see picture 7). The difference in position of these two combinations is 10 mm. Similar positioning can be achieved with the viola model.

Changing the height

The height of the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® for violin and viola can be adjusted by turning the rubber feet into or out of the thread of the barrel legs.

To provide maximum stability, the short and long barrel leg each have a different angle.

To avoid instability, do not use two long barrel legs on both sides.

We recommend using the barrel leg combinations found in the barrel leg combination charts for violin and viola.

For extra low positions two short barrel legs may be used.

EXTRA HIGH POSITIONS

For extra high positions, please replace the standard rubber foot with our long rubber foot (available separately, see picture 8) which adds a maximum of 13 mm to the height of the chosen side of your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA®.

When using a long rubber foot in a short barrel leg, do not use it on the chest side.

HEIGHT DIMENSIONS

The following chart shows the adjustable height range of the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® using the short and long barrel legs with the standard or long rubber foot (available separately, see picture 8).

Depending on the arching of the instrument, the minimum distance between shoulder conctact area and instrument is approx. 23 mm using two short barrel legs or approx. 25 mm when using a long and a short barrel leg.
The latter configuration offers a maximum distance of approx. 35 mm. Using a long rubber foot (available separately, see picture 8) on both the chest and the shoulder side adds up to 12 mm for a maximum distance to the instrument of approx. 47 mm.

Maintenance

Following these maintenance instructions is essential for the stability and longevity of your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA®.

Cleaning the rest

To ensure that the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® functions correctly over time, it is important to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating between the hooks and the barrel legs. For this reason it is essential to place your PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® into its included cloth bag when not in use.

The PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA® should be cleaned with a damp cloth. Dirt accumulating in the cavity under the barrel legs can be removed with cotton.

The rubber feet

For the best grip on the instrument, keep the rubber free from dust and dirt. Clean with a damp cloth. Over time and depending on usage, the rubber of the feet may wear. Please check the condition of the rubber before every use and replace a foot as soon as damage has been detected.

Failure to do so can lead to scratches on the instrument and/or instability of the KorfkerRest® LUNA®.

Replacing the rubber pads

Starting at one of the ends, first remove the worn-out rubber pad. If the glue of the pad does not easily peel off, it can help to slightly heat the rest with a hairdryer. Any glue left after removing the pad can be removed with the sticky side of a worn-out pad.

Next, peel the backing off one of the replacement rubber pads included with the accessories. Position the new pad by aligning the large eyes of the pad exactly over those of the shoulder rest, making sure that the pad is also placed exactly centred along the length of the rest.

On the chest side the pad may need to be slightly stretched to match the circle at the end of the rest.

Finally, strongly press the full surface of the rubber pads onto the rest, paying special attention to its entire edge. Failing to do so will cause premature peeling.

Leave the adhesive to bond fully overnight.

The o-rings

The o-rings around the stopping pins are important for the optimal functioning of the PIRASTRO KorfkerRest® LUNA®. If one of the o-rings has been damaged or lost, replace it by a new one taken from amongst the accessories.

Please observe that the small o-rings are used for the short (see picture. 9) and the larger o-rings for the long barrel legs (see picture 10).

Install the correct o-ring into the small bevel around the stopping pin. Starting at one corner, with a wooden toothpick carefully stretch the o-ring from corner to corner around the end of the stopping pin. Finally push the o-ring into the bevel along the sides of the stopping pin so it sits flush with the wall of the barrel.

If an o-ring needs to be removed because it is damaged or the wrong size has been fitted, care must be taken not to damage the surface of the barrel leg. For this purpose, a wooden toothpick can be used and hooked behind the o-ring.
